What is 4th of July?

Generally, the Americans celebrate the 4th of July. This is marked as an event of humongous historical significance for the country. This was the date when Americans declared independence for their country. The thirteen colonies of America that were previously under the chains declared themselves as a free state on the 4th of July. They were no longer under the clutches of the British Empire.

Historical significance

Before the American independence, the United States comprised of thirteen colonies namely – Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts Bay, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. It was since 1587 that these agricultural places had been ruled by the British. In fact, these colonies were exploited mainly for their resources. Although the British shared a good relationship with the settlers, yet the fire of nationalism gradually began igniting with the issues over British laws and taxes.

From 1765 the settlers raged in the motion of “no taxation without representation”. This tension finally resulted in the Boston Tea Party which gave rise to the war of independence. The Declaration of Independence was signed the following year by 56 representatives from the thirteen colonies. The conflict continued until the Treaty of Paris and ultimately the war ended in favor of America.

Since the 18th century, the 4th of July is celebrated with great pomp and show. There are fireworks, feasts, speeches, parties and general celebrations held all over the country. In Bristol and Rhode Island, there was a salute of 13 gunshots both in the morning and in the evening in 1777. This was one of the major acts of independence celebration that the town celebrated.

In 1778, George Washington, who was then the general of a revolutionary army, marched with his troops along with a double rum nation. The first music that was recorded for this occasion was the Psalm of Joy. Till now, this remains one of the national songs sung patriotically on this day every year.
